For her 31st children’s book, “Dragon Dreams,” Roni Schotter of Hastings sought to offer an escape into a world of imagination, kindness, and peace.

“While I was writing it, which was four or five years ago, the world was getting harsher, and so that found its way into the story, because it became a story about not fighting and about loving and being kind,” she said. “I'm assuming it's even more timely right now as our world is so dark.”

With illustrations by Khoa Le, “Dragon Dreams” was released on Jan. 28 by Astra Books for Young Readers with a cover price of $18.99. The book, which is aimed at ages 3 to 8, follows a dragon-loving child as she slips into sleep, tired from a day of bickering with her sister. A dragon appears in her window to invite her on a journey through the night sky. They soar to a secret gathering with dragons carrying children from all around the world, including the protagonist’s sister. The story explores several themes, including the idea of reconciliation.
