IRVINGTON — To coincide with the federal holiday celebrating the end of slavery in the United States, a co-naming ceremony was held on Saturday, June 22, in honor of a self-made millionaire whose parents were enslaved.

During a Juneteenth event at her former home, Villa Lewaro, the road that borders the property to the north, Fargo Lane, received the honorary name of Madam C.J. Walker Way.

The blue-and-white street sign was unveiled by Walker’s great-great-granddaughter, A’Lelia Bundles, who wrote a biography about her grandmother that was published in 2001 and who founded the Madam Walker Family Archives.
