DOBBS FERRY — Powered only by gravity, the Banana Bob 6000, Blue Flame, Bronx Zoomer, Cheetah, Crimson Rose, Red Lightning, and Road Runner raced down Main Street on Sunday, June 30.

The occasion was the Dobbs Ferry Recreation Department’s second annual Soapbox Derby, which featured multiple heats during which the 8- to 14-year-old drivers started on a ramp near Cedar Street and ended in front of the firehouse, where a wall of hay bales was in place to stop those unable to brake.

The drivers competed in two divisions — Little Turtles for ages 8-12 and Turbo Teens for ages 13-18. For each $115 registration fee the recreation department provided a kit that included a steering mechanism, wheels, instructions, and templates.
