Committee weighs in on future of facilities

During a debut presentation for Irvington community members on Sunday, Dec. 8, the Village’s newly formed Facilities Planning Committee (FPC), identified the Department of Public Works (DPW) building, police headquarters, and firehouse as the Village facilities with the greatest need for renovation or relocation.

The 11-member committee, co-chaired by Irvington residents and architects Mike Aziz and Arthur Chabon, created a facility scoring system, giving out points to each facility based on location and quality and configuration of the space. Nine points is the maximum score a facility could receive, indicating the greatest need. The FPC gave nine points to the DPW building, eight points for the police department and justice court building, and seven points for the firehouse.

The FPC was formed this April, after Irvington residents voted down an $18.2 million bond proposal to revamp the village facilities in November 2023. Committee members state that since forming, they’ve had more than 30 meetings among themselves and with village administrators. In September, the committee toured many facilities, including the recreation center, nature center, senior center, firehouse, Department of Public Works, and Town Hall.
